‘Asphodel' ( a perfect companion piece to ‘Asphodel (II)’) is a psychedelic interpretation of a landscape scene captured deep within the Malolotja Nature Reserve in Eswatini, a small kingdom nestled within South Africa. The unique landscapes of Eswatini are characterised by their dramatic terrain, ranging from lush forests and rivers to rugged mountains, offering a breathtaking backdrop for a photography adventure I took to this bucket-list destination in December 2008..

I used a multiple exposure photography technique to superimpose two slightly different perspectives of the same landscape scene, applying different coloured filters to create a striking, graphic image that transcends the natural world's colour spectrum. The result is reminiscent of viewing a scene through old-fashioned 3D cinema glasses, with an added depth that draws you deeper into the vicarious experience of being in this isolated gorge.

As with most of my work, my goal is to transform objective reality into something surreal, challenging the imagination rather than the intellect to decipher it. I captured this image as a storm brewed overhead, the air tingling with the anticipation of thunder. The visual schism from the overlapping exposures reads as a tectonic shuddering of the mountains. The title evokes this ominous atmosphere, referencing the Asphodel Meadows of Hades in Greek mythology, a surprisingly idyllic corner of the afterworld where ordinary souls reside after death, neither rewarded nor punished for their lives on Earth.

Drawing inspiration from the South African landscape, I use photography to explore the spectrum of perception, deeply studying an environment with open eyes, mind, and heart. My work is an interrogation of perception and imagination, regarding the camera as a magical toy rather than a forensic device, allowing for playful exploration of the medium.
