    Eswatini MMXVIII

Limited edition art photography print on archival paper

‘Asphodel (II)’, a captivating companion piece to ‘Asphodel (I)’, presents a unique, psychedelic interpretation of a landscape scene within the magnificent Malolotja Nature Reserve in Eswatini, a small independent kingdom within the borders of South Africa.

In this artwork I rely on both multiple exposure photography and optical filtration, superimposing two slightly altered perspectives of the same scene, and utilizing different colored filters to create a bold, graphic image that steps outside of the natural world's colour spectrum. The effect is reminiscent of looking through old-fashioned 3D cinema glasses, adding depth and immersing you within the secluded gorge of the Eswatini mountains.

I captured this particular moment amidst the anticipation of an approaching storm, the air charged with the electricity of imminent thunder. The title draws upon the ominous atmosphere, referencing the Asphodel Meadows of Hades in Greek mythology, a realm where ordinary souls dwell after death, experiencing neither reward nor punishment for their earthly lives. The dominance of vivid, fiery red through the use of filters dials up this figurative association with Hades, and the underworld.

As an artist, I strive to transform objective reality into something surreal, challenging the imagination rather than the intellect to decipher the scene. Inspired by the diversity and uniqueness of the Southern African landscape, I venture into it regarding the camera as a magical toy for playful experimentation, to express my fascination with the natural world. ‘Asphodel (II)’ was made with this same “beginner’s mind” approach, and the result is a fresh and alluring statement piece that captivates the eyes and the imagination. It invites ongoing exploration, with the viewer discovering different aspects each time they observe it.
