While living in Yokohama, Japan in 2006-2007, I made a pilgrimage to the enchanting Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park in Hakone, a place renowned for its hot springs, natural beauty, and breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. It was this experience that inspired me to create ‘March of the Samurai Beetles, Hakone’, a unique art piece made by digitally mirroring a 35mm double exposure photograph of a Japanese maple, resplendent in its full gradient of autumnal hues.
The intricate, psychedelic depth of this image is a result of the multiple exposure technique, which adds a mesmerising dimension of detail. The organic texture of 35mm film further enhances the evocative allure of this striking composition.
Turning objective reality into something surreal and challenging to the imagination, the mirroring effect I employ humanises nature and evokes ideas about alternate realms of reality. Through symmetry, human, animal, spirit, and even alien faces emerge — a phenomenon rooted in our innate ability to distinguish symmetrical faces from our surroundings. Like a Rorschach test, the imagery that results from this symmetry is entirely subjective and may reveal insights into our subconscious.
As an artist, I draw inspiration from the natural landscape and the spectrum of perception we tap into through photography, deeply studying an environment with open eyes, mind, and heart. I view the camera as a magical toy rather than a forensic device, allowing me to playfully explore perception and imagination. ‘March of the Samurai Beetles, Hakone’ is a bold statement piece with a mesmerising effect on any room it hangs in.
