I find endless inspiration in the rare beauty of the South African landscape, and 'Awakening' is a celebration of the unique and captivating energy of spring in the West Coast National Park, where vivid daisies and indigenous succulents burst into being for a few weeks in the otherwise semi-arid landscape on the Atlantic coastline. 

This limited edition art print is created using a multiple exposure technique to produce a unique and dreamlike effect, superimposing a landscape scene with abstract painting created as spontaneous response to the scene. The artwork captures a stunning landscape of exploding flowers set against the semi-arid landscape, showcasing the riot of colors and energy of the spring season, and amplified by equally innumerable particles of paint. Stylistically, the fusion of spraypaint into the scene calls to mind the artistic style of Pointilism, enhancing the painterly impression of this digital photograph, dialled up all the more in printed form with the texture of Hahnemühle German etching paper. 

The artwork is a celebration of the natural landscape of South Africa, and it honours the unique shift in consciousness that spring brings about. Hope thaws out again. It was taken on one of my first photography trips in almost two years after being trapped in Covid lockdown, and thus celebrates freedom, and nature, and a return to the eternal cycles of life after a period of so much stagnancy. It was a perfect day, and an exceptional display of the world famous daisies. Left unperturbed by humans as it had been for such a luxuriously long time, the earth's vital energy was powerful and overflowing. Standing barefoot in the fields of flowers you could trick yourself into feeling as though you were tuned into its frequency; humming underfoot and in the air, radiating colour and life into the atmosphere like rain steaming off a hot tar road.
